FEATURES: Checkpoint
The advent of Matrix Online sees the return of this column formerly penned by Mark Plummer. James Bacon has now bravely taken on the Checkpoint mantel, although this first outing does see a somewhat debut, due to our columnist being distracted by minor events in his personal life: marriage, honeymoon… that sort of thing.

However, here is James’ take on a couple of popular fanzines.

Checkpoint: News on fans and fandom

by James Bacon

PROLAPSE

After winning a clutch of Nova awards last November, Peter Weston is continuing from strength to strength with his fanzine Prolapse. This fanzine’s focus is Fan History over many era’s and to date it has featured an interesting and insightful collection of articles from professionals and fans alike, who reminisce about the fifties, sixties and seventies. Such diverse items as an article from a fan who lived with John Brunner, to 2,000 word letters from Mike Moorcock talking about his experiences shed light on a history and social network that has perhaps been unwritten about to this extent before.

ProlapsePete Weston is producing the zine at a phenomenal rate – seven issues in his first year; an A4 40 page behemoth of a zine, and he regularly mentions that he has run out of space and is already filling up future issues. BSFA members might be interested in the discussion through letter columns and in articles that provide valuable insight into the formation and early years of the BSFA. The letters column, though, is also peppered with Pros: Chris Priest, Barry J Bayley, Harry Harrison, Brian Aldiss and Brian Stableford all having something to say about their time in this community that is Science Fiction Fandom.

Issues of Prolapse are available on efanzines.com

DRINK TANK

Drink TankChris Garcia is one of those larger than life fans, who seems to have a penchant for partying and also for producing fanzines. He produces his fanzine The Drink Tank on nearly a weekly basis. Despite this frequency, he seems to have a wide range of contributors available and he is continually increasing his readership. Garcia also won the most recent Trans Atlantic Fan Fund vote, and will be representing the US at next month’s Eastercon, in Heathrow, London. One of the nice aspects of Drink Tank is Garcia’s use of artwork, which he seems to have no shortage of, and his total reliance on producing the zine in a PDF format and making it available online. Well worth looking at occasionally, as the varied content throws up a bit of something for most fans, with a recent piece about racism by Hugo winning fan artist Frank Wu being a prime example of the often challenging articles that Garcia is happy to publish.

Drink tank is available exclusively on efanzines.com
