NEWS: Ken Slater Honoured
Ken Slater was founder member #6 of the BSFA in 1958

In 1947 Ken founded Operation Fantast, 'a very loosely organised group of fans who all wanted to "do their own thing" in various ways, and found that OF offered a sort of umbrella or shield which enabled them to do these things.' By 1950 membership had reached 800 people worldwide.

Ken SlaterThe European Science Fiction Society have honoured Ken Slater, who passed away in February, with a special award for ‘Contribution to Science Fiction Fandom’ during this year’s Eurocon, which took place in Moscow, May 15th to 18th.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list of award winners was dominated by Eastern Europeans, with the only other Westerner to appear amongst the sixteen winners being Russell T. Davies, who won ‘Best Promoter’. Kate MulgrewThe full list can be seen here: http://www.sfawardswatch.com/?p=763

Next year’s Eurocon will be held in Fiuggi, Italy, between March 26th and 29th. Guests of Honour will be Bob Silverberg, Russian SF writer Sergei Lukyanenko, and actress Kate Mulgrew, who played Capt. Kathryn Janeway in TV’s Star Trek: Voyager.
