NEWS: The Sunny Side of Science Fiction

Tony Thorne was awarded an MBE, by the Queen, for developments in low temperature (cryo)surgical instruments as well as high temperature graphite processing furnaces.
He has held patents in such varied subjects as nuclear protection equipment, very high temperature processing, and microbiological analysis equipment.

BSFA Member Tony Thorne (MBE), who describes himself as a (very) old-time fan, has just released a collection of seventeen genre stories set in and around the island of Tenerife, called, fittingly enough, Tenerife Tall Tales.

With an introduction from no less a figure than Harry Harrison, the collected stories encompass such things as modified DNA, alien visitation, glimpses into the near and far future, a black hole as garbage disposal, a different kind of ‘Who-Done-It’ and a cautionary tale about the dangers of second hand clothes.

Tenerife Tall Tales Tony, who was involved with the freshly de-mobbed Captain Ken Slater in advancing Operation Fantast, now lives in Austria, but wisely spends his winters in the somewhat warmer environs of the Canary Islands. A former nuclear engineer, model aircraft designer, book store owner and occasional lecturer for the British Interplanetary Society, Tony was awarded an MBE for developments in low temperature cryosurgical instruments as well as high temperature graphite processing furnaces. He promises that there are still more stories set around Tenerife to come.

Tony’s website can be found at: http://www.tonythorne.co.uk and Tenerife Tall Tales can be purchased direct from the site.
